Sizing up our tournament teams

Although not a polished offensive threat, White creates offensive opportunities with her defense and wreaks havoc on opposing teams' guards. White must avoid the foul trouble that sometimes plagues her due to the high energy level she plays with.

Tournament question mark: The bench. Teams in Div. 2 North will have a hard time matching Masco's starting five, and even though Bob Romeo has regularly played three or four players off the bench, only once has the bench been put in a position where it had an opportunity to win a game. In Masco's only loss — an overtime setback to Cardinal Spellman — both Stewart and White fouled out. The Chieftains aren't a dominant team with Stewart, White, or Burns spending significant minutes on the bench.

DANVERS>p> Record: 12-8

Starting five: Kellie Macdonald, Fr.

Anniversary 'Thriller' CD can't beat original

Such bonuses would have been ideal for the 25th anniversary edition of Thriller, which doesn't even come with liner notes. The state-of-the-art-remastering job of the original album is nice, revealing just how intricately layered the production is. But previous digital versions of Thriller, which won a Grammy in 1983 for best-engineered non-classical album, were fine.

The new remixes do absolutely nothing to buttress the album's legacy. The retooled songs - especially "The Girl is Mine" by will.i.am and "Billie Jean" by West - are unimaginative with generic hip-hop beats and pointless rapping (that would be from will.i.am) added to Jones' already superlative tracks. And Akon's slowed-down version of "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" sounds as nasally and overly processed as any of his own hits.

Review: This notebook is all business

My demo unit was running Windows Vista Business, which for some reason doesn't ship with the common Codecs needed to play DVDs. Only consumer editions of Vista do; I guess Microsoft figures business people don't need to play DVDs. I didn't discover this until onboard my transcon flight, which meant four hours reading the in-flight magazine instead of enjoying the hilarity that is Superbad. Once on the ground and on the Web, with some searching I was able to download the needed codecs from a third-party Web-site; Microsoft had wanted me to pay them for an upgrade instead

Woe is Vista

That's not my main Vista beef, however. That lies with their overzealous anti-piracy practices. When I first received the demo notebook I unpacked it, flipped it on and began the initial automated install.

Power pole knocked down after crash

A crash at Old St. Augustine Road and Pine View Drive knocked out a power pole, but no one was seriously injured.

The intersection was blocked off for several hours after the 3 a.m. crash so the power pole could be repaired, but it is now open, said Lt. Ken Bergstrom, of the Tallahassee Police Department.

Don't be scared of digital

Question: I'm worried about the digital TV transition. Will digital-to-analog television signal converters be available? I heard the government would be helping out. Can you explain?

Answer: In February 2009, all television broadcasts will go digital. Owners of analog televisions will need a digital conversion box. Otherwise, you won't be able to receive over-the-air television signals. This issue only applies to those using an antenna. Converter boxes will be widely available before the transition. The government has a program to help. It's offering coupons to offset the cost of a converter box. You must apply for a coupon and can find a link to the program at www.tulsaworld.com/komandonews.

Q: You often mention the benefit of 802.11n over 802.11b and 802.11g.
