Ebook Readers the Kindle, iLiad Reviewed

Last spring, I shared my thoughts on the first-generation Sony Reader (see SLJ March 2007 "Test Drive," p. 23). While I found the ebook reading device somewhat flawed, I was quite impressed with its paperlike and retina-friendly E Ink display. Since then, I’ve had the chance to track the evolution of this technology by testing two other products that feature E Ink, the iRex iLiad and the Amazon Kindle.

The iLiad. www.irextechnologies.com/products/iliad. $699. Still stoked from my experience with the Sony Reader, I was literally trembling with geeky excitement when I opened up the package containing the iRex iLiad. After all, this ebook reader promised some real improvements. For starters, the iLiad boasted a bigger touch-sensitive screen (8.1 inch, 122mm by 163mm)—one you could actually jot and save notes on.

End of an era - Netscape finally laid to rest

NETSCAPE Navigator, once the world's most popular web browser, will finally be laid to rest next month after its owners gave it a last-minute stay of execution.

AOL today delayed plans to abandon support for Netscape web browsers by one month, to March 1. The company had originally planned to cut off support tomorrow.

Early internet users will fondly remember Navigator's small blue and yellow icon of a ships' wheel. The browser was first released in 1994 and for a time was the program most people used to surf the web.

When Microsoft introduced its Internet Explorer browser the following year, the two companies became entrenched in the "browser wars" that led to the software giant being sued by the US Department of Justice for smothering competition.

Roberts RD-41 DAB radio review

We've a little bit of a soft spot for anything retro, so we jumped at the chance to review the Roberts RD-41 as it fuses traditional styling of a Roberts radio with DAB radio for a sharp, clear sound.

The Roberts RD-41 is simple and easy to use. Plug it into the mains (it can be used with six LR20 batteries) and the LCD screen lights up blue, which perfectly complements the silver dials and buttons.

An Autoscan function finds stations (we found 39 different DAB stations), and it is easy to manually programme in more stations. Up to 12 of your favourite stations can be added to the Roberts RD-41 as pre-sets and there are 12 alarms, which can be programmed to radio, playlist or beep.

We loved the fact the Roberts RD-41 has a PausePlus option that pauses live radio in case you get interrupted when listening.

Elegant albums, DIY

Unless you're still snapping photos on that disc camera you got back in '86, you're probably aware of how digital technology has changed personal photography. It's now possible to shoot, edit and - most important - share your images online with family, friends (and MySpace stalkers) quickly and easily.

But 20 years from now, do you really see yourself cuddling up with the kids on the couch to page through your wedding album - on your laptop? Technology is nice and all, but it doesn't look particularly lovely sitting on the bookshelf.

Fortunately, online photo Web sites have moved far beyond just offering two-for-one prints. It's now possible, even easy, to turn out an artfully designed, beautifully bound photo book - or just about any other kind of book - yourself.

Last year, as her daughter Isabel's first birthday approached, Susan Lubking Kling found herself staring down the digitized mountain of snapshots she'd taken of her baby.

Although photogs didn't snap photos of Leo with Gisele, it doesn't mean he wasn't there – he could have been hiding from photogs. After all, he does have a girlfriend, model Bar Rafaeli, who is reportedly off working (which means making a pouty face while looking perfect in a bikini).

Do you think Leo and Gisele should reunite? Do you even care about the former party boy? Talk back below.

Sound Advice: Pentax K20D to supplant less expensive K10D camera

Q: I have been pretty happy with my Olympus E-10. The price was right and my old Pentax cameras were starting to really show their age (my favorite one is well over 40 years old.)

Now it seems that my Olympus is developing problems, and the company says it can no longer repair it. I have read that Pentax digital SLRs would work with any Pentax lens, which intrigued me as I have about eight different screw mount lenses I would love to be able to use again. I'm tempted by the newer models for the speed, as my E-10 is just not up to catching action shots.

Would you recommend I buy a Pentax K10D and a screw mount lens adapter? Or would I be better off just buying a kit with two new lenses and giving my old equipment to a museum?

A: Nikon digital SLRs as well as Pentax digital SLRs work with older manual focus lenses, so this advice applies to both Nikon and Pentax lens owners.
